The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, and a former Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, secured official tickets for the 2027 general elections. Both political figures emerged unopposed to represent their respective federal constituencies under the platform of the All Progressives Congress.
TheCable reported on 17 May 2026 that the duo clinched the tickets during the primary elections conducted across the eight federal constituencies in Abia State. The internal party election recorded active participation from various party members and stakeholders who arrived at the designated venues.
Kalu was returned as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the Bende Federal Constituency. Meanwhile, Onyejeocha successfully secured her ticket to represent the Isuikwuato and Umunneochi Federal Constituency.
While announcing the final results on Saturday at the state secretariat of the party in Umuahia, officials confirmed the names of other successful contestants. Chris Nkwonta won the ticket for the Ukwa East and Ukwa West Federal Constituency, while Uzor Azubuike emerged victorious for the Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituency.
A former Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Chinedum Orji, also won his election to represent the Ikwuano, Umuahia North, and Umuahia South Federal Constituency. In another development, Uzoma Theodore Uka secured the ticket for the Isiala Ngwa North and Isiala Ngwa South Federal Constituency.
The primary election also saw Udo Alozie emerge as the candidate for the Obingwa, Osisioma, and Ugwunagbo Federal Constituency. The final slot was taken by Ikenna Nicholas, who clinched the ticket for the Arochukwu and Ohafia Federal Constituency.
The Chairman of the Abia State National Assembly Primary Election Committee, Barrister Erasmus Cishak, commended the party members for their orderly conduct. He maintained that the committee adhered to internal democracy and described the exercise as "peaceful, transparent, and credible."
The successful outcome of the primaries is expected to alter the political landscape in the region. The peaceful exercise will likely strengthen the preparations of the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections in Abia State
