Iran’s Supreme Leader has addressed the growing protests by business owners over the sharp decline in the value of the national currency, describing the economic grievances as legitimate while warning against what he termed external interference and disorder.
Speaking on January 3, 2026, the Supreme Leader acknowledged that business owners and traders have valid reasons to express concern over the country’s worsening economic conditions. He stated that objections rooted in economic hardship are justified and should be distinguished from actions that threaten public order.
However, he cautioned that certain groups, which he described as “enemy mercenaries,” were attempting to exploit the protests by introducing slogans and actions directed against Iran and Islamic values. According to him, such actions blur the line between peaceful protest and unrest.
The Iranian leader emphasized that while the government is open to dialogue with peaceful protesters, it will not tolerate violence or what it considers rioting. He stressed the need for vigilance, stating that adversaries continuously seek opportunities to destabilize the country.
Reaffirming Iran’s stance against external pressure, he said the country would remain resilient, relying on faith and public support to confront what he described as hostile forces.
The remarks come amid heightened economic strain and public dissatisfaction, as inflation and currency depreciation continue to impact businesses and households across Iran.
