FMC Abeokuta Considers Transfer of Worker Accused of Sexual Misconduct Against Student Nurses
ABEOKUTA, OGUN STATE - The management of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abeokuta, Ogun State, is reportedly considering transferring a staff member, identified as Ajayi Adebowale Alaba, to the facility’s Joga Orile annex following allegations of sexual misconduct involving student nurses undergoing clinical training at the hospital.
The proposed transfer has raised concerns among individuals familiar with the matter, who fear that moving the staff member to another facility could complicate efforts to independently investigate the allegations.
A source familiar with the development told Globalvoice that the FMC Abeokuta management was considering transferring Ajayi to Joga Orile Health Centre, an annex operated by the medical centre.
The source alleged that the proposed transfer could shield the staff member from scrutiny rather than facilitate an investigation.
“The report getting to me now is that the HNS (Head of Nursing Services), FMC Abeokuta, is planning to transfer the staff member, Mr Ajayi Adebowale Alaba, to Joga-Orile, which is an FMC annex, just to cover up the atrocities the said man has committed,” the source alleged.
The allegations reportedly involve student nurses from the Ogun State College of Nursing Sciences who were undertaking clinical postings at FMC Abeokuta.
Accused Worker Does Not Give Direct Denial
When contacted, Ajayi did not directly confirm or deny the allegations.
Instead, he said he had been advised to consult a psychiatrist over a health-related issue.
“They said I should go and see the doctor. If there is something that... I'm trying to see the doctor concerning my health issues,” he said.
Asked directly whether the allegations of sexual assault were true, Ajayi struggled to provide a definitive response.
“Actually, it is something that... I can't say it. I can't say it. It has not happened either. But I don't even know. Sir, I don't even know, to God who made me. Those girls have their own destinies, I can't lie against them,” he said.
He subsequently appealed for assistance.
“So, please, sir, if there is any help you can do for me, sir, please, sir. To God who made me, sir.”
Ajayi Confirms Transfer Discussions
Ajayi also confirmed that discussions were underway concerning a possible transfer to Joga-Orile, although he said his interest in visiting the facility was also connected to his reported health concerns.
“Yes, sir. It's not like... They are working on it very soon because I wanted to see the consultant of that place, but I never saw the consultant because of the strike,” he said.
He said doctors at the facility had spoken with him and advised him to see a consultant.
“Because of the industrial action, there are some doctors there. They have seen me, asking me how things are. They said I need to see the consultant very soon. So today, now, I am going there. I'm hearing that the strike is on again,” he said.
When asked whether the matter involved a medical condition, Ajayi responded in the affirmative.
He also confirmed that the consultant he was expected to see was a psychiatrist.
Student Nurses Previously Petitioned FMC
The latest development comes amid concerns over the safety and welfare of student nurses undertaking clinical postings at healthcare facilities.
Globalvoice previously reported that the Student Union Government (SUG) of the Ogun State College of Nursing, Abeokuta, petitioned FMC Abeokuta over two separate allegations involving sexual harassment and inappropriate sexual conduct against student nurses during their clinical training.
The complaints were contained in a formal report dated September 25, 2026, and submitted to the Medical Director of FMC Abeokuta through the Head of Clinical Services, Director of Nursing Services and Head of the Education Unit.
The report was signed by Comrade Odedoyin M.A., Executive President of the SUG; Senator Muhammed A.S., Senate President; and Senator Agemo A., Deputy Senate President, on behalf of the student body.
Copies were also addressed to the Provost of the Ogun State College of Nursing, Abeokuta, and the Director of the School of Nursing.
According to the SUG, the complaints arose from incidents allegedly involving hospital personnel at the Male Medical Ward on September 23 and 24, 2026.
The union said the affected students personally reported the allegations and provided individual accounts of what they said occurred.
It said the decision to formally document and escalate the complaints was prompted by the seriousness of the allegations and the need to ensure that students undergoing clinical training have a safe environment.
Student Alleges Unwanted Sexual Contact
One of the complaints was made by Okonkwo Goodness Chinecherem, a student of the Ogun State College of Nursing.
In her account, she alleged that she was subjected to inappropriate sexual conduct during night duty at the Male Medical Ward on September 24, 2026.
She reportedly told the SUG that she was sleeping during her break when Ajayi, whom she identified as a male porter, approached her and touched her without her consent.
She further alleged that he subsequently attempted additional sexual contact.
According to the petition, the student alleged that the incident left her shocked, frightened and emotionally distressed and made her feel unsafe in the clinical environment.
Second Student Raises Separate Complaint
A second complaint was submitted by Aminu Olulabikunmi, another student who was undertaking clinical training at the Male Medical Ward.
Her complaint concerned an incident she said occurred on September 23, 2026.
According to her account, she did not have access to a designated bed during her break period.
She alleged that Ajayi offered his bed to her so she could rest while he slept elsewhere in the ward.
The student reportedly told the SUG that while she was asleep, the worker later returned and lay beside her.
She further alleged that he covered her with a cloth before making what she described as an inappropriate advance.
Aminu said she immediately stopped the alleged conduct and left the bed.
The student reportedly told the SUG that she considered the circumstances surrounding the offer of the bed and the subsequent conduct inappropriate, particularly because she had been asleep and was therefore in a vulnerable position.
Questions Over Proposed Transfer
The reported consideration of Ajayi’s transfer to the Joga-Orile annex has now added another layer to the controversy.
Those concerned about the allegations are calling for the claims to be investigated independently and for any administrative decision concerning the accused staff member to avoid compromising the process.
The allegations remain allegations and have not been established by a court or an independent investigative panel.
The central questions now are whether FMC Abeokuta will conduct a transparent investigation, whether the students involved will receive adequate protection and support, and whether any transfer of the accused worker could affect the credibility or accessibility of the investigation.
As of the time of filing this report, FMC Abeokuta management had not publicly responded to the allegations or explained whether Ajayi’s proposed transfer was connected to the complaints raised by the student nurses.
