Yoruba freedom fighter, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has arrived at Cour De’appal De Cotonou, a court in Benin Republic, for his trial.

The activist was arrested last Monday at an airport in Cotonou alongside his wife by security operatives in the West African country.

 

Reports have it that he would be tried for immigration-related offences.

The lead counsel for Igboho, Ibrahim Salami recently disclosed that, the Nigerian government told Benin Republic government to arrest the activist and extradite him back to Nigeria.

Speaking with BBC Yoruba, the lawyer disclosed that the Nigerian government accused Igboho for terrorism and smuggling of arms into Nigeria.

 Salami also said the Nigerian government also accused the freedom fighter of calling for secession and disturbing the peace of the country.

Salami said, “The Nigerian government said Igboho was involved in arms trafficking into Nigeria.

“The second one is that he is causing disturbances in Nigeria and the third one is that he is trying to divide Nigeria into two or three.” 

globalvoice had on Thursday reported that the Cour De’appal De Cotonou, Benin Republic, where Igboho and his wife, Ropo, were arraigned on Thursday. The court ordered for the wife to be released same day. 

The court had ruled that Igboho should be returned to custody.
