The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has described the Supreme Court’s recent ruling as a confirmation of unity and stability within the Peoples Democratic Party.
The apex court on Thursday sacked Taminu Turaki as national chairman of the PDP and upheld earlier decisions that nullified the party’s convention held in Ibadan on November 15 and 16, last year.
Justice Stephen Adah, who delivered the lead judgment in appeal number SC/CV/164/2026, held that the appellants violated a subsisting order of the Federal High Court restraining them from proceeding with the planned convention.
Reacting at a press conference in Abuja, Mr Wike said the apex court judgement had finally laid to rest all disputes over parallel leadership structures within the party.
“Today, the Supreme Court has brought to an end the so-called factions of the PDP. There is no more faction in the party. There is only one PDP,” the minister declared.
Mr Wike further stated that court dismissed appeals challenging earlier judgements from lower courts, thereby upholding the legitimacy of the party’s convention held in March.
According to the minister, attempts by aggrieved members of the party to overturn the outcome of the convention failed at all judicial levels.
He said, “The Supreme Court has validated our convention and set aside all claims to any parallel structure. What this means is that the PDP has come to stay as one united party.”
Mr Wike also berated members who exited the party during the crisis, adding the door is still open for others willing to return.
“Those who left are not electoral assets; they are liabilities. However, those who left out of uncertainty may reconsider and return now that the situation is clear,” he said.
Stressing the need for political actors to operate strictly within the framework of the law, Mr Wike warned against actions capable of undermining party constitutions and electoral regulations.
“The fact that you are in a position does not mean you can act outside the law. There are rules guiding party activities, and those rules must be followed,” he added.
The minister maintained that the PDP remains Nigeria’s foremost opposition platform, expressing confidence in its readiness to provide credible alternatives in the country’s democratic process.
“The PDP is stable, united and ready to play its role effectively. What has happened today is a victory for the rule of law and internal democracy,” Mr Wike added.
Meanwhile, the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee of the party insisted the apex court’s ruling could trigger a fresh leadership crisis within the party.
